Tracing the source of infections by the bacterium responsible for bovine tuberculosis

Cases of bovine tuberculosis are rare in France, but infected cattle herds are still regularly reported. In order to determine the exact role of wildlife, especially badgers, in transmission, scientists from the Laboratory for Animal Health have been reconstructing the evolution of the bacterium that causes the disease.

Equine health at the heart of a new joint technology unit

The French Horse and Riding Institute (IFCE) and ANSES have set up a joint technology unit (UMT) to strengthen their shared research on horse health. Its work will focus on three main areas: an equine census and monitoring of mortality, several risks associated with parasites and pathogens in the horse environment, and infectious diseases affecting reproduction.

TIQUoJARDIN is looking for volunteers to collect ticks from the gardens around Nancy

When they bite, ticks can transmit pathogens such as the bacterium responsible for Lyme disease. Although this risk is usually associated with forests, many bites also occur in gardens. The TIQUoJARDIN project is seeking to better understand the associated risks, and to do this it relies on the participation of as many people as possible. After a first campaign in 2021, the scientific team is once again calling on the inhabitants of Nancy and its surroundings to collect ticks in their gardens from 1 May to 10 July 2022.

Understanding the increase in damage caused by a fungus in the Landes forest

For the past three years, Cronartium pini , a fungus responsible for pine blister rust, has been causing increasing damage to maritime pines in the Landes forest. Work by the Plant Health Laboratory's Mycology Unit has shown that the nearby establishment of peony fields was not responsible, although it had increased its transmission and aggravated the extent of the damage it had caused.

What effect do herbicide-tolerant varieties have on plant biodiversity?

The cultivation of herbicide-tolerant varieties (HTVs) of crops raises concerns for plant biodiversity. In a study conducted with INRAE and the regional chambers of agriculture, ANSES measured the impact of their use on plant diversity in and around fields.

The fight against Campylobacter begins on the farm

A European expert appraisal led by an ANSES scientist has re-assessed the effectiveness of Campylobacter control measures on chicken farms in preventing transmission of the bacterium to humans. The results have just been published in a scientific journal.

Using artificial intelligence to improve food safety: ANSES and the CNAM create Metabiot, a dedicated research unit

ANSES and the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) have created Metabiot, a contracted research unit dedicated to the processing of massive data on the safety of foods of animal origin. This new jointly supervised entity will conduct research into diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans, and will focus in particular on bacteria that pose risks to human health, throughout the production chain, on farms and in the food processing industry.
