"Why does bovine tuberculosis persist in some French regions but not others?” – Portrait of Ciriac Charles, PhD student

Every year, ANSES organises discussion meetings on ongoing and recently completed research work, in order to encourage interactions between scientific teams. At these meetings, the PhD students hosted at the Agency present their theses. Ciriac Charles received the award for best poster by an ANSES doctoral student in 2021. Discover his background and research work.

Drosophila as a model for exploring the effects of pesticides on Parkinson’s disease

The Drosophila melanogaster or fruit fly may be used to assess whether pesticides induce an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. This was the conclusion reached by scientists in the ANSES Lyon Laboratory’s Neurodegenerative Diseases Unit, who have been collaborating with researchers from the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon. Working on paraquat, they also showed that the effects of this compound on proteins were not strictly identical to those of ageing. We interviewed Jean-Noël Arsac, one of the authors of the study.

A partnership to better control bacteria in food processing facilities

The presence of Listeria and Salmonella bacteria in food processing facilities poses several problems: pathogenic for humans, these bacteria are capable of persisting for a long time in the environment and resisting treatment with biocidal products. The Actia Fastypers Joint Technology Unit (UMT) was recently created by the French Ministry of Agriculture for a five-year period, in order to work on these issues. It brings together research teams (ANSES, INRAE) and agro-industrial technical institutes (Actalia, for the dairy sector, and the French Pork and Pig Institute (IFIP)).

A new role for ANSES in monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater

ANSES's Laboratory for Hydrology has been appointed National Reference Laboratory for the monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and sewage sludge, by the Ministries of Health and Ecological Transition. Its responsibilities include harmonising the methods used to detect the virus and assessing the abilities of the laboratories tasked with carrying out the analyses.

Bee health: review of the latest research findings

Studying the causes of bee mortality, identifying the pathogens affecting bees, taking better account of the effect of pesticides on their health… Every two years, the Agency organises a one-day meeting on the research, expert appraisal and surveillance work relating to bees. This is an opportunity to review the various research projects carried out by the Agency on this theme.

Antimicrobial resistance in animals: what major conclusions can be drawn for 2020?

European Antibiotic Awareness Day is taking place on 18 November 2021. For this occasion, ANSES is publishing the results of several monitoring programmes that it carries out to prevent the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in farm and domestic animals in France. Below is a review of some key findings with Jean-Yves Madec, Scientific Director for antimicrobial resistance and Head of the French surveillance network for antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria of animal origin (RESAPATH), Gérard Moulin, Deputy Director of the French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV), and Agnès Perrin-Guyomard, Deputy Head of the National Reference Laboratory for antimicrobial resistance.

Marco project: six years of marine research in Côte d’Opale

After six years, the Marco project (Marine and coastal research in Côte d’Opale: from environments to resources, uses and the quality of aquatic products) is coming to an end. In honour of this occasion, its five partner agencies are holding a conference from 13 to 15 October in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Below is an overview of the themes of this project, to which ANSES contributed with regard to the quality of seafood products, in particular by studying microplastics and their impact on them.

Improving the monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in animals

Monitoring antimicrobial resistance is essential to making sure that antibiotics are used appropriately in order to reduce the resistance of micro-organisms. ANSES scientists have taken part in several studies showing how this monitoring can be improved, either by taking account of bacterial species that are not yet monitored, diversifying surveillance contexts or promoting harmonisation at European level.

How a parasitic worm travelled across Europe

By analysing the DNA of Echinococcus multilocularis parasitic tapeworms, an international group of scientists led by ANSES has determined how foxes carried this worm, responsible for alveolar echinococcosis, from the Alps to Northern and Eastern Europe.
