Assessment of materials and processing aids in the areas of food and water

Thematic Working Group

The Working Group (WG) on "Assessment of materials and processing aids in the areas of food and water" (MATAE) reports to the Expert Committee (CES) on "Assessment of physico-chemical risks in food" (ERCA) and the CES on "Water".

This Working Group has the following roles:

  • assessing the health risks associated with chemical substances/components used in the formulation/composition of materials in contact with food and water;
  • assessing the health risks associated with chemical compounds used in the formulation of products intended to clean these materials;
  • assessing the health risks associated with processing aids and new processes used for the production of foodstuffs;
  • establishing or revising guidelines for preparing authorisation or approval applications for materials in contact with food and water, or processing aids;
  • providing strong regulatory support in the WG's areas of expertise in France (e.g. revision of national regulatory texts) and also offering scientific and technical support for European work, in particular with regard to materials in contact with drinking water;
  • monitoring health developments in the areas for which it is responsible.
